In 2006, I began my specialisation in Occupational Safety Engineering at Unicamp. I completed the course in 2007, with 620 hours of training in machine hazards, occupational hygiene, ergonomics, fire, legislation, road safety, applied psychology and management.
In the same period, I took part in Germany in a training programme for Brazilian environmental specialists. That international experience opened a cycle of learning that would continue in other countries.
In June 2006, I joined PepsiCo Foods Brasil. I was the first occupational safety engineer the company hired in the country. My initial work involved integrated management systems, legal compliance, environmental education and setting up EHS practices.
Joining PepsiCo placed safety at the centre of my career. Systems had to be built, leaders had to be mobilised, and practices had to work in real environments subject to production, pressure, targets and cultural differences.
In 2008, I took part in the Sustainability Leadership Program at the University of Oregon and began training in Environmental Diplomacy at the University of Geneva, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme.
Lessons learnedNo culture can be passed on without the example set by leadership.
